Opening act, The Simpletons. psychodots dash in for annual holiday shows by fred kraus Fans of the Cincinnati-based band the psychodots have a little something extra to be thankful for as this fourth Thursday of November nears. The legendary power-pop trio, widely praised for its original songwriting and dazzling musicianship, will alight for two Thanksgiving holiday shows: Nov. 10 at Canal Street Tavern, and Nov. 22 at the Southgate House. While their last public performance together as psychodots was about a year ago, the three -- guitarist Rob Fetters, drummer Chris Arduser and bassist Bob Nyswonger -- do team up in varying combinations for musical projects throughout the year. Nyswonger performs with Bucket and with Bam Powell and the Troublemakers. Arduser and Nyswonger also work together in The Graveblankets. With Fetters, they joined King Crimson alum Adrian Belew to finalize their Bears CD that had been in the works for -- how long was it, guys? -- years. That CD, the edgy/catchy Car Caught Fire, was released this summer and has received substantial airplay on 97.7-FM. Their initial work with the Raisins and the Bears continues to draw critical praise. With the holiday feast approaching, we cooked up some questions -- an uneven baker's dozen -- for the three boy wonders: Here are the questions: 1. What are the last three CD's you played? CHRIS: 1. Gary Burton/Astor Piazzolla "reunion" 2. Miles Davis "Bag's Groove" 3. Pete Townshend/Raphael Rudd "The Oceanic Concerts" ROB: I can't remember. BOB: 1. Chris Arduser's 6 song Graveblankets demo. 2. Tom Toth's "A Change in the Weather." 3. O Brother soundtrack. 2. Where is Dayton in relationship to Cincinnati? CHRIS: Over there. ROB: On top BOB: Dayton is Cincinnati's largest moon. 3. What didn't you learn in kindergarten? CHRIS: To stop loving beatle boots ROB: How not to lose my milk money. BOB: The infield fly rule. 4. What's the weirdest thing you do when you're alone? CHRIS: Even a man who is pure at heart and says his prayers by night can turn into a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the moon is full and bright. ROB: Talk to myself. Chat with wild animals while i'm running. Casual consensual self-gratification isn't weird, is it? BOB: Sing. 5. What is the last thing you used the Web for? CHRIS: Answering these questions via email. ROB: Looked up a marathon schedule. BOB: Catching Flies. 6. Paul or John? CHRIS: JOHN! ROB: John - or Paul. BOB: John is doing a better job of being dead. 7. Do you have a nickname for your instrument? CHRIS: Which instrument? ROB: You fucker. BOB: Nope. 8. What's the frequency, Kenneth? CHRIS: &%%#$&&**((875$87g8r*&Brr97T^(87t8 ROB: A dip in the right ear at 8K from standing next to deathy's crash cymbal for 30 years. BOB: 97.7. 9. Describe your pre-show ritual. CHRIS: There was a certain chinese restaurant in Dayton that housed many a pre-dot show orgy of food and strong black tea. now that it is closed, I am utterly adrift and inconsolable.....I may not make it to the gig..... ROB: Lose my set list. blow nose. brush teeth. stretch voice. Pray. Thank God for the privilege. Find my set list. BOB: In Dayton, we would always go to Chins restaurant and drink mass quantities of tea to get wired up. The last time we played there, Chins seemed to be out of business so we were kind of like a rudderless ship - any suggestions? The last thing I do before we play is get a large glass of soda water with lime. 10. What would you do if you were invisible? CHRIS: Attempt a Claude Rains impersonation. Something like...."The drugs I took seemed to light up my brain!!!!" ROB: What wouldn't i do? BOB: Disrobe. 11. Who would you most like to interview? CHRIS: 1920's film director/actor Erich von Stroheim, whose curious mix of arrogance and vulnerability led to his being ousted by the Hollywood elite a fter creating a small but undeniably influential body of work. (His last film was produced by JFK's father!) ROB: I've always thought a chat with Jesus would be interesting. BOB: Jesus Christ. 12. What do you see when you turn out the light? CHRIS: A creature whose name must never be uttered! EVER !!!!!!!!!!!! ROB: Very tiny colored sparks and the space station slowly spinning its way toward me to pick me up. BOB: The night light. 13. What's the best question you've never been asked? CHRIS: Why are you so the way you are? ROB: What do you value above all else? BOB: Where would like your yacht docked? I think this building is a former church. Also peforming is Todd Almond (as Hedwig), Chuck Cleaver, Ruby Vileos. It's part of the CEA awards for local music and theater. There's no mention if Rob is receiving an award. It's also a benefit for LINK (Lonely Instruments for Needy Kids). The ad says it's presented by Time Warner Cable, but there's no mention of it's being broadcast. Tickets at Old St. George or at City Beat (513-665-4700) ---------------- A few things about last weekend's dots show - A tally sheet by the cash register listed the attendance at 201 (capacity=225) There were Graveblankets CDs and "Car Caught Fire" for sale, but not a single dots CD. I'm pretty sure they weren't sold out since I got there at 8:30. There's a new Rob song about relationships "adding up to zero" . There was also a new song by Chris but no new Bob songs. As you might imagine, they did "Caveman" and Rob mentioned that Bob recently sold it, for a few weeks, to ABC for promos. They also did "Clive" (like last year), Citroen, Water Under the Bridge. Rob also embellished the beginning guitar part to "Hell" (I think that was the one). I thought it was a new song, at first. Other than that, nothing really surprising in terms of a set list, but Chris promised a few different songs at the Southgate show. Rob was sporting a stratocaster with lots of different colored paint dabs on it. I didn't get very close to it, but I think it may have been his former red strat that someone took a brush to. It's starting to look like the strat he had a long time ago that got stolen. Bob had a new Rickenbacker bass and Chris had new/old drums (something about May, 1965 Ludewigs?; not sure) Overall, it was an excellent show; best sound I've ever heard at Canal Street. I didn't think it was possible, but it seems they've actually gotten tad better at their instruments. It must be nice to have 40 years of practice under your belt (oh well, none of these guys could hold a candle to me in the paperwork area). --pete ++ psychodots ++ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 22:52:57 -0500 From: "Jim A." Subject: Canal Street Show What a great night! The dots sounded as good as ever, regardless of a few "mistakes" that Rob acknowledged at one point during the show. Plenty tight enough for the fans that wish they would play together more often - the audiance was clearly thrilled with their performance. I hope those that couldn't make this one, won't miss the Southgate House show on November 21. Jim A. ++ psychodots ++ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 08:19:58 -0500 From: "Jeffrey A. Fans of the 'dots can also see singer/guitarist Rob Fetters in an acoustic setting on Nov. 23, as he open for locals Gravy8 at the York Street Cafe. The Bears (Fetters and dotmates, Bob Nyswonger and Chris Arduser, along with guitarist/singer Adrian Belew) are also looking to play some live shows in February in support of their fantastic new release, Car Caught Fire, which is up for Album of the Year honors at this year's Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. Fetters is scheduled to perform acoustically at the Nov. 26 event, which takes place at the Old St. George church in Clifton. For more on the psychodots, check psychodots.com.
